2NE1 (투애니원; can be pronounced as either “twenty-one” or “to anyone”)
is a South Korea girl group created by YG entertainment. It was first
mentioned by the press in late 2008, where rumours has it that YG is
going to create a female version of BIGBANG called “Sista”. However, YG
entertainment president mr Yang Hyun Suk clarified that the name was not
chosen yet. In January 2009, it was announced that the “female bigbang”
will debut at around july 2009 consisting of three members: Park Bom,
Sandara Park, and Ku Hye Sun.
However, in the later part of that month, YG stated that two more
members, CL & Minzy will be joining the group disincluding Ku Hye
Sun. Eventually, it was confirmed that the group would consist of four
members in total and will debut sometime in may 2009. In addition, YG
also stated that the group had trained for four years and that 1TYM
leader Teddy Park will be producing the songs for their Debut Album.
Initially the name of the group was announced as “21″ however, due to
the discovery of a singer with the same name, the group was then named
2NE1 which stands for New evolution of the 21st century.
Their first song was LOLLIPOP (created for LG to promote their cyon
phone together with BIGBANG) which was digitally released on the 27th of
March 2009. As it was an advertisement song, there were difficulties
with network chart eligibility. However, it was proven that “Lollipop”
was a strong chart hit, going to #1 on various online charts and topping
music television network M.Net’s online chart for four weeks in a row.
On april 30, it was revealed that 2NE1′s debut song (titled “FIRE”
fully written & produced by teddy park) would be a hiphop/reggae
song that will be digitally released on 6th may 2009.
There were two versions of the fire music video- Space version & the
Street version which was released on the same day. The group’s first
performance of the song was on May 17, 2009, on SBS Inkigayo beginning
the group’s activities.
the song topped M.Net’s online chart and the group’s name became a top
search term. They were rewarded with three Cyworld Digital Music
Awards,both “Lollipop” and “Fire” winning “Song of the Month” awards and
the group winning “Rookie of the Month” for May 2009. Their first
Mutizen award during their fourth stage performance in SBS Inkigayo
(Popular Song) on June 14, 2009 and 2nd Mutizen award was also on SBS
Inkigayo on June 21 2009.
With their awards successes, 2NE1 signed a deal with FILA to become the
new models for their commercial campaign 2 days after 2NE1′s Mutizen
win.
“I Dont Care” was released as the second single on 1st of July
2009,with promotions starting in early July for (a softer, more feminine
image)
In September, the group briefly promoted “Pretty Boy”, “In the Club”,
and “Let’s Go Party” on various Korean music shows before ending
promotions for their album. After ending their promotions, each member
began releasing their own solo singles. Dara was the first, with “Kiss”,
featuring fellow member CL. Bom then released “You and I”, which was
promoted in the fall of 2009. CL and Minzy then released “Please Don’t
Go” after Bom finished promoting her single. On March 11th, the full
music video for “Try To Copy Me” was released.
